Trespassers die in Unseelie territory. He marked her instead of executing her — and left her stranded in both worlds without explaining what the mark is for.

Royal cartographer Rowan Ashby crosses into Unseelie territory on her first day mapping the Thornwood border. She knows the law: trespassers are killed. The Unseelie King marks her instead — a binding that ties her to his court and strips her standing in either world until the map is complete and he releases her. He offers no explanation for why he chose a mark over the standard method. She stops asking and begins working, because the map is the only leverage she has. Over four weeks inside the court, she notices that he watches her the way someone watches a thing they've been patient about for a very long time. The map is nearly complete. The question she can't answer: what the mark was actually for.
