Kashar had it on the feed within three seconds of the alert tone sounding — not a klaxon, the system didn't evaluate this as a weapons-grade contact, just the low chime that meant something had crossed the threshold for classification. The contact resolved the way passive returns always did, building from ambiguous thermal signature to identifiable profile over a spread of forty seconds as the Ardent's array accumulated data. Small vessel. Mass consistent with Keth scout class. Drive signature absent — the engines were either cold or running beneath the detection floor, which meant they were running hot enough to move but quiet enough to avoid the kind of return that triggered the threat assessment.

No weapons signature. The contact was not radiating on any targeting or fire-control frequency.

It was running a path.

Kashar watched the trajectory plot assemble itself in real time. The contact was moving through the outer boundary of the Corridor on a heading that bore no obvious relationship to the Ardent's position — it was not approaching, not retreating, not holding station. It was transiting. A long diagonal cut through the near-boundary zone, at a consistent bearing, the kind of movement that looked purposeless until you knew what you were looking for, and then it stopped looking purposeless immediately.

He pulled up the secondary array overlay. The secondary array was running at forty percent capacity since the coupling damage in the Verath approach — four days ago and still not fully restored, the diagnostic log a record of partial function across seven of the seventeen nodes that constituted the backup coverage ring. The result was a specific gap in coverage: an angular dead zone approximately thirty-two degrees wide, centered on the Ardent's port-dorsal quadrant, where the secondary array's interpolation algorithms ran thin because the node density beneath that threshold was insufficient for reliable composite tracking.

The contact's path went directly through it.

He looked at the trajectory again and calculated back. At Fleet intelligence's standard estimate for Keth scout approach speeds — seven hundred kilometers per second, sustained, on a reconnaissance approach — fourteen minutes of transit time put the nearest point of the scout's path at approximately four hundred thousand kilometers. The scout had come within four hundred thousand kilometers of the Ardent and had moved through the precise angular gap in the secondary array's coverage for the full duration of its passage. The primary array had picked it up at entry and would have it again at exit. Between those two moments, the scout had been invisible to the backup system.

That was not a coincidence.

Coincidence required a path chosen independently that happened to align with a technical limitation. The path here was not approximate — it did not clip the edge of the dead zone, it did not pass near the gap. It transited the gap's centerline, maintained that bearing for the full fourteen minutes, and exited clean. The probability of a randomly chosen transit path achieving that kind of precision was not worth calculating.

The contact exited the primary array's coverage range fourteen minutes and seventeen seconds after entry. The return degraded, ambiguous, then absent. The Corridor was empty again.

Kashar sat with what he had for thirty seconds.

The scout had mapped a coverage gap. Either it had been triangulating — running the path blind, noting the absence of Ardent sensor response as it moved — or it had known the gap was there before it arrived. A triangulation run would require multiple passes or significant passive dwell time in the area before the approach. There had been nothing on the feeds for eleven hours before this. No prior contact, no anomalous returns, nothing that would suggest pre-transit dwell. A triangulation run with zero prior approach time was not impossible, but it required the scout to have executed the path correctly on the first attempt, which was a different order of difficulty than running a confirmed route.

Confirmed, meant prior knowledge.

He spent four minutes with that and then made a decision.

The Ardent's port-dorsal quadrant, where the dead zone lived, faced outboard into the Corridor's far boundary — open space, no mass obstruction, nothing to shadow it. The secondary array's gap existed because the nodes were damaged, not because anything physical blocked the coverage zone. If the Ardent rotated — attitude adjustment, no thrust, just a reorientation on the vertical axis — it was possible to place the hull itself across the dead zone's angular field. Not to fill the gap with sensors. To fill it with mass. The hull would block the geometry from outside: a scout running the same path again would find the gap no longer empty, because the Ardent's own structure would interrupt whatever passive return the gap had previously offered.

It was a maneuver that used the damage as a defense by refusing to let the damage remain a consistent feature.

He opened the helm interface and ran the numbers. Seventeen degrees of rotation on the vertical axis, one-point-three second burn on the port attitude thrusters, fuel cost negligible at this maneuver scale. The drive coupling would engage for the attitude control system's stabilization cycle. He flagged the coupling diagnostic before initiating — it was still within normal parameters, the stress ratings showing no accumulation from the eleven hours on station, the thermal readings nominal. This was not the kind of demand that would push it.

He initiated the maneuver.

The Ardent moved. There was no drama in it — attitude adjustment was not combat thrust, not an evasive vector, not the kind of acceleration that pressed you into your seat or changed the sound of the ship around you. What Kashar felt was the faint vibration that always accompanied thrusters firing, a sound more than a sensation, and then the slow drift of the star field across the forward viewport as the ship's orientation shifted. Seventeen degrees. The burn completed at one-point-two seconds, slightly under projection, and the attitude control system ran its stabilization cycle without flagging the coupling. The coupling held. The Ardent settled into its new heading.

He updated the sensor overlay. The port-dorsal dead zone now sat behind the hull's mass profile relative to the outer boundary. A scout running the previous path would find nothing navigable there — the geometry no longer worked. The gap was still a gap, the secondary array was still at forty percent, the node damage was unrepaired. None of that had changed. What had changed was that the gap no longer pointed outward in a useful direction.

The scout did not come back.

He watched the feeds for forty minutes after the contact dropped. Nothing crossed the outer boundary on any heading. The Corridor held its silence. He ran a secondary passive sweep on the exit vector, the direction the scout had used to clear the sensor range, and it returned clean — no secondary contact, no escort, no observation platform lingering at the edge of detectability. The scout had run its path and withdrawn. Whatever it had been looking for, it had either found or not found, and it was gone.

He was logging his analysis of the transit geometry when Vol appeared at the entrance to the bridge.

She had the expression she wore when she had assembled information and was waiting for the appropriate moment to deliver it — not urgency but a quality of attention that meant she had been working a problem. She came to stand beside the helm station and looked at the feed Kashar had been studying.

"I ran the path geometry against the secondary array diagnostic record," she said.

"I did too."

"The centerline alignment is within one-point-seven degrees of the dead zone's midpoint." She paused. "That's not triangulation resolution. Triangulation from a single approach pass doesn't give you one-point-seven degrees. That's map quality."

"Yes."

"The secondary array's current configuration — forty percent, specific node failures, the gap as it exists right now — that configuration isn't standard." She said it without inflection. "It's specific to the damage we took at Verath. The dead zone's angular position changed when we lost nodes four, nine, and twelve. Before that, the secondary array had a different coverage profile."

Kashar waited.

"They knew which nodes were down," Vol said. "Our current configuration. Not our standard configuration." She looked at the feeds for a moment. "That information would be in the maintenance logs we transmitted to Fleet after the Verath approach. It would be in the damage assessment filed with Okafor's command report."

She did not say what this meant. She did not need to. Kashar already knew what it meant, had known it for the forty minutes he had been watching the feeds, had held it at the edge of the operational picture where it would not interfere with the decisions that needed to be made before the analysis was complete.

There were two places that maintenance log would have gone. Fleet records, where it would be accessible to anyone with the correct clearance level. Or somewhere else — a channel faster and less official than Fleet records, a path that ran from the Ardent's damage report to someone who had given it to someone who had known how to use it.

Cross had not spoken since hour seven.

Kashar did not look toward the aft corridor where Cross's bunk was. He looked at the Corridor on the passive feed — empty, quiet, the outer boundary holding the same silence it had held for eleven hours — and noted what had just been added to his understanding of their position.

"Thank you," he said.

Vol nodded once and returned to her station.

The feeds showed nothing. The drive coupling was nominal. The Ardent held its new heading in the dark, its hull turned outward against a gap that nobody outside this ship was supposed to know existed.
