Hour fifty.

The inner system boundary was not a physical thing. It was a threshold defined in Fleet protocol — a notional sphere at a specific solar radius inside which all transit vessels were required to maintain active transponder status and respond to automated grid queries. The Ardent crossed it without ceremony. The passive array noted the shift in electromagnetic density. Vol noted it on his board.

Then the grid pinged them.

The transponder exchange was automatic, the handshake protocol requiring no crew action: the grid's central relay queried; the Ardent's transponder responded with registry, classification, last known port of call, current drive status; the relay acknowledged. The whole sequence took 0.3 seconds. Kashar watched it complete on the comms display without touching the controls.

The grid showed green.

No active alerts. No emergency protocols. No special query codes requesting identification confirmation or flagging a vessel operating outside authorized corridor boundaries. The inner system's defense architecture was running its standard watch, and the Ardent had been admitted with the reflexive courtesy of a system that processed a thousand transponder handshakes per day and found this one unremarkable.

"Operational," Vol said.

"I see it."

The difference out the forward ports was physical. After twenty-two hours of the Corridor and its particular emptiness — no signal clutter, no beacon drift, no electromagnetic noise from other ships in proximity — the inner system felt crowded. Commercial freighters tracking their standard freight lane profiles. A passenger liner inbound to Station Seven. Two Fleet pickets at their standard patrol waypoints, their positioning signals orderly and expected. Earth's orbital infrastructure generated the background noise of civilization, the electromagnetic signature of a system running as designed.

None of it was emergency traffic. All of it was normal.

"The insertion team is inside the grid," Kashar said.

"Not tripped the detection layer." Vol was running the same calculation. She could see it. "The grid's sweep frequencies would catch anything with active power draw above threshold at orbital altitude. They're either below threshold or in a dead zone."

"Which they would have identified in advance." She pulled up the grid topology on the secondary display — not the public version, the Fleet maintenance overlay, which showed current sensor status across all platforms: active, reduced-capacity, offline for scheduled work. "Keth insertion protocols. What do you know about how they use maintenance windows?"

He was at his console before she finished the sentence.

The analysis took eleven minutes. Kashar worked from the grid's maintenance schedule outward, identifying coverage gaps where sensor density dropped below detection certainty for a vessel running cold. Vol worked from the other direction — Keth approach profiles, the preferred orbital altitude bands, the doctrine preference for positions adjacent to human maintenance traffic that would mask residual heat signatures against existing IR noise.

They converged on L4.

The defense platforms at Earth's L4 Lagrange point were part of the grid's outer detection layer. Positioned sixty degrees ahead of Earth in its orbit, designed to extend sensor coverage into the approach volume any inbound threat would necessarily transit. The L4 cluster was currently on scheduled maintenance — not a full shutdown, not the kind of status change that triggered automatic review. A six-day window of reduced operations: active sweeps cut to a four-hour cycle to conserve power during the drawdown, sensor coverage in the maintenance sector's north quadrant degraded from redundant to minimal.

A vessel holding position in that quadrant, running cold, drawing nothing above life support and minimal comms, would be resolved against the platform cluster's own electromagnetic signature on a four-hour sweep cycle. It would be difficult to distinguish.

"Six days," Vol said. "They built the schedule around it."

"They knew the window." She looked at the maintenance schedule on her display. The window had opened three days ago. It closed in three. "Everything before this — the message, the timing, the route — they planned it against a window they knew was coming."

"Course change?"

"L4."

He plotted it. She went to the drive telemetry.

The Ardent had been burning for twenty-two hours. Fuel draw was in the upper range of projected consumption — not critically, but the coupling had been running warm since hour thirty-six and Okafor had been managing it with the kind of manual precision that cost margin. Kashar pulled up the thrust efficiency display.

Okafor's voice came over the intercom three seconds later. She had been watching the same display.

"Commander."

"I see the draw."

"Eighty-five percent to L4 is sustainable. I have approximately four hours at this rate before I need to cut to seventy." A pause of the kind that meant the calculation was complete and not favorable. "At seventy I can hold indefinitely. Arrival variance is thirty-two minutes on the far side of the window."

"Hold eighty-five."

"Understood."

The course adjustment was a combined RCS nudge and drive vector shift — four degrees of bow arc, new heading locked into the nav system, the burn continuing without interruption. The deck vibration did not change. The drive at 85 percent rated thrust had its own quality of presence: not the 14-hertz resonance of the drive room amplified through the frame, which Kashar had stopped consciously registering hours ago, but something in the sound profile of the ventilation cycling under load, a frequency difference she had learned to notice on previous long burns as an indicator of sustained high thrust versus cruise.

The Ardent held 85 and moved for L4.

Fourteen seconds after the course change locked, the comms panel showed an incoming connection.

Kashar looked at it.

The channel identifier was an encrypted military relay routed through a Fleet communication node. She recognized the relay address. She had memorized it six years ago during a mission briefing that had nothing to do with the current operation, and she had not seen it used since. She knew what it was.

She opened the channel.

"Commander Kashar." Cross's voice was neutral in the specific way of voices that are being managed: not flat, not cold, but deliberate. Every inflection chosen. "You have left the Corridor."

"Yes, Admiral."

A pause shorter than a full beat. "This conversation will be logged."

"I know."

Her own voice saying it. True in every direction. The Ardent's logs had been running since hour twenty-eight — every course change, every sensor return, every command decision, timestamped and stored. Fleet's relay node would record the transmission. Cross's channel would record it on her end. There was no version of this conversation that did not exist on record. Kashar had understood that since she made the first command decision and had not revised the calculation.

Forty seconds.

She did not look at the time display. She counted it internally, the way she counted intervals during any operation where the clock mattered and looking at it would be information she didn't need. Vol was at his console across the bridge, not pretending to find anything that would produce noise. The comms room's background hum — ventilation, passive array, the low carrier signal from the open channel — occupied the space where speech was not.

Forty seconds was not nothing. Cross was not calibrating a response. She was deciding something, and the decision had mass, and Kashar waited for it in the posture she used when waiting was the correct tactical choice: still, eyes on the comms display, not filling the silence.

Then:

"What have you found?"

What have you found. No preamble — not correction, not compliance review language. The question of someone who needed information she did not yet have, and who had moved, in forty seconds of silence, past everything else she might have said first.

Kashar understood the question. She understood what it meant that Cross was asking it.

She began to answer.
