Chapter 13: The Burn

04:00.

The order went through on internal only. No broadcast. Kashar's voice in their earpieces, flat and procedural: Attitude adjustment. All hands brace for RCS fire.

Vol braced against the navigator's console with both palms — geometry, not fear. A ship turning in space doesn't bank like an aircraft or roll like a boat. It pivots around its center of mass on reaction control thrusters, and the thrust vector never quite passes through the exact point where you're standing. What you feel is a lateral nudge at the shoulders, a slow corkscrew pressure that settles into your inner ear and tells it a lie about which way is down.

The Ardent turned.

Four degrees per second on the yaw axis. The stars through the forward ports swept in a long unhurried arc — the Corridor's mouth sliding past, the pale smear of the inner system rotating into frame, Earth somewhere in that smear, not visible at this distance, not visible to the naked eye. The ship groaned once through its hull, a low structural complaint from the frame adjusting to off-axis thrust, and then the stars stopped moving.

They were pointed the wrong way. Facing where they'd come from. The drive nozzle now faced Earth.

All hands. Initiating main drive burn. Mark.

The Ardent lit up.


Vol had read the physics. He'd understood it intellectually — that 0.5g sustained over distance was not violent acceleration, that this would not feel dramatic. He hadn't fully believed it until he felt the burn settle into his legs like extra weight, like the ship had decided gravity existed again and had chosen a direction for it. A chair materialized under him out of nowhere. He sat in it.

Kashar was at the command station. She had her eyes on the passive array display and the drive telemetry simultaneously, moving between them in a rhythm that had been hers for however many years she'd been doing this, and Vol couldn't read anything useful from watching her face. He stopped trying.

The Corridor fell behind them at half a meter per second squared.

That was the math. The feeling was different. The feeling was that nothing was happening, that the burn was a constant low hum in the soles of his feet and a slight heaviness in his chest, and that outside the ports the stars weren't moving because stars never move, and that the only evidence they were going anywhere was the telemetry confirming what the drive was doing and the passive array receiving signals from a universe that was not actively trying to kill them.

Vol said nothing. Kashar said nothing. The silence between them was the kind between people who had been in the same room when the same things happened, who understood that saying them aloud would not process them faster and might in fact slow the work. There was still work. The work was the bridge. The bridge was the burn.

He watched the telemetry. She watched the array. The drive ran.


Down in the drive section, Okafor had the thermal panel open.

The coupling was not failing. She needed to be precise about that, even in her own head, because the distinction mattered — there was a difference between failing and running warm in ways I predicted it would, and she had predicted this. She had written the prediction in her log before the burn started. She could prove it.

What the coupling was doing was absorbing sustained high-thrust load for the first time since the Crossing Point. The probing maneuvers during the approach and withdrawal had been intermittent — short bursts, low duty cycle. The burn was continuous. Forty-eight minutes into it, the coupling's thermal signature had begun to climb past the nominal range, and Okafor had been watching it climb with the careful attention of someone watching a child walk near a cliff edge. Not panicking. Watching.

She had a thermal management tool — a calibration lance, essentially, a long-handled rod with an interface head that could be inserted into the coupling housing to manually adjust the heat-sink valve. The automated system would have done this on its own if the coupling were functioning normally. The coupling was not functioning normally. The automated system had been making the wrong call.

She made the right call. Three millimeters of valve adjustment, held for a count of fifteen while she watched the temperature display, and the climb flattened.

The coupling was running at the high end of her predicted tolerance. Not above it. At the high end.

She left the thermal panel open. She stayed where she was.

By the second hour, the temperature had stabilized. The burn was carrying them toward Earth at a rate she'd calculated to bring them inside the mission window with time remaining, and the coupling was holding, and there was nothing left to do in the drive section except be present in case it changed.

She stayed where she was.


Two hours in. Kashar noted the time, noted the velocity, noted the estimated position relative to the departure point. The Corridor was now approximately 14,000 kilometers behind them. Distant enough that a passive sensor return from that end would be faint, degraded, delayed by the time for light to travel.

She ran a passive sweep anyway.

Running silent was not the same as running blind. The Ardent was emitting nothing — no active sensor pings, no comms, no position beacons, no electromagnetic tells beyond what the drive plume itself was radiating into space, and the drive plume was unavoidable, a fact she had accepted. What passive sensors could do was receive. No transmission. Only listening.

She swept toward the aft.

The Corridor's far end came back in fragments — thermal noise, background radiation, the faint electromagnetic residue of the Keth scouts who had been there and were presumably no longer there. She filtered the noise. She applied the classification algorithms.

There was a return she didn't immediately recognize.

She adjusted the filter parameters. The return sharpened. Not a scout — the signature cross-section was wrong for a scout. Too large by a factor of six, perhaps seven. The thermal output was consistent with a vessel running cold — minimal drive emissions, passive posture, a ship that was holding position without advertising itself. The electromagnetic profile was low, deliberate. Not the profile of a ship that had just arrived.

A ship that had been there long enough to cool down.

Kashar ran the classification against the library. The library returned three candidates: Keth heavy cruiser classes, designations she had memorized during the Corridor briefings before they'd ever entered this region. Displacement in the range of 180,000 tons. Weapons loadout she knew by category without needing to look it up.

It had been at the far end of the Corridor when the scouts arrived.

She ran backward from the thermal signature. A ship running that cold, that still — it hadn't just arrived in response to the Ardent's incursion. It hadn't been positioned after the scouts made contact. The cooling-down period implied hours of static holding. The scouts had come to this end of the Corridor, had encountered the Ardent, had been destroyed, had transmitted — all of it with this vessel already present at the far end, watching.

It had been there the whole time.

Not as response. As architecture. The Corridor had two ends, and someone had put something large and quiet at the far end before any of this started. Before the Crossing Point. Before the Ardent had made its first transit.

Kashar looked at the return for another thirty seconds. She confirmed the classification. She logged the timestamp, the position, the signature characteristics, the probable vessel category. She noted in the log that this vessel had not maneuvered. That it was still holding. That it had not fired on the Ardent's drive plume despite having the geometry to do so.

That last fact did not reassure her. It meant she didn't yet understand the intent.

She cross-checked the mission window. Thirty-two hours remaining. At current burn rate, the Ardent would be inside Earth's orbital shell with hours to spare. The vessel at the Corridor's far end was 14,000 kilometers behind them and stationary. The math said they would make it.

The math had said other things before, and she had learned to read the math and then look past it.

Vol was watching her. She hadn't noticed when he'd shifted from telemetry to looking at her, but he had, and he was doing it without asking.

She turned the display toward him.

He read the signature data. She watched him work through it the same way she had — the size, the thermal profile, the time implied by the cooling curve. She watched him reach the same place.

"It was waiting," he said.

Somewhere between question and statement — the space where something becomes real by being spoken.

"Yes," Kashar said.

Outside the ports, Earth was still invisible at this distance, a point of light among points of light, pulling them forward at half a meter per second squared. The Ardent's drive ran without complaint. The coupling held.

They were moving.
